Osram is a global leader in optical solutions. The Metal Can® PLT5 522FA_P-M12 has been released by it; its first commercial off-the-shelf semiconductor laser emitter to produce the specific 514nm wavelength output required by many applications for life science in research and diagnostics.

Manufacturers of scientific and measurement equipment now have an alternative to the argon-ion lasers that were previously required to produce laser emission with a peak wavelength of 514.5 nm: a 514 nm (1 nm) laser diode. An argon-ion laser has a shorter operational lifetime and is generally more expensive. A semiconductor laser, like the PLT5 522FA P-M12, has a longer operating lifetime and does not require a complicated water cooling system. An argon-ion laser’s cooling and power supply weigh many kilograms, but a single-mode laser diode weighs only a few grams.

The significant logistical effort needed in the past to create laser diodes binned by a single wavelength has hindered previous attempts to produce laser-diode based 514 nm emitter modules. Customers will be able to construct a narrow-bandwidth using a VBG (volume Bragg grating) or external cavity design with the new 514 nm laser diode, bringing the bandwidth down to 0.1 nm for uses like Raman spectroscopy and holography.

The fluorescent dyes in the 514 nm range as well as a number of external lenses are compatible with the laser diode PLT5 522FA P’s 50 mW optical power output at 514 nm 1 nm (Bin M12). This qualifies the laser diode for a variety of uses in the study of life, such as: spectroscopy, flow cytometry, and confocal microscopy Identification and examination of the materials analysis using DNA sequencing forensic evaluation

The ams OSRAM PLT5 522FA P-M12 laser diode is supplied as a standard component and is easily accessible through approved sales channels.

The market for scientific equipment will gain from a green, cost-effective alternative to replace large, expensive argon-ion lasers without sacrificing optical performance or precision. This option is provided by the 514 nm variant of the PLT5 522FA P laser diode family, which maintains performance within its operating parameters with a high degree of precision, allowing customers to cut their materials costs and save space while enjoying the significantly longer lifespan before replacement of a high-quality laser diode.
